New interactive, online tool will give government agencies, employers and media an understanding of superdiversity!
The tool measures differences within ethnic communities, comparing literacy, employment, education, home ownership and income. Characteristics such as age, sex, immigrant status and ethnic background are also highlighted.
Paul Spoonley, Distinguished Professor at Massey University, commented on the importance of understanding superdiversity, “recent debates have simplified and defined immigrant groups by a narrow set of characteristics. This can misrepresent and distort the realities of immigration. A better understanding of the complexities of migrant communities is important for social cohesion.”
The project was led by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, in collaboration with Professor Spoonley, and Statistics New Zealand.
The tool focuses on three cities, Auckland, Vancouver and Sydney, where more than 25 percent of the population was born overseas.
The tool supports the Office of Ethnic Communities' focus on growing knowledge and understanding of ethnic diversity and inclusion in New Zealand.
