Ragalayam- Mini School of Indian Classical Music’ was founded in August 2020 and is one of a kind in the Otago region. It is a unique initiative to encourage pupils to learn an intricate and complex subgenre of classical music, called Carnatic music, that originated in the Southern states of India way back in the 12th century. Ragalayam is open to all, irrespective of age or ethnicity, and classes are offered both in-person (in Dunedin) and online via Zoom.

Carnatic music, like Yoga, has therapeutic effects. It has the potential to relieve stress and unlock latent energies in the mind, and is highly effective in building positive mental discipline. Learning Carnatic music not only helps improve musical talent and creativity, but also social skills, self-confidence, multitasking capabilities, team spirit, and the list goes on… Pupils of Ragalayam gain from the numerous physical and mental health benefits that Carnatic music offers to its learners and audiences. Furthermore, Ragalayam serves as a medium that helps people of the Indian community stay connected with their roots and culture, and make them feel at home away from home.

Ragalayam has many strong suits, one of which is creating innovative fusion music by blending the aesthetics of Indian classical music with modern/western instrumental music to add interesting flavours to well-written ancient Indian compositions.
