On 31 May, Pegasus Health and Workforce Development awarded scholarships to 23 students from diverse backgrounds to study nursing, medicine, or applied health. Two recipients of a scholarship were Seungjun Lee (known as Steve) and Phillipa Muza.
Steve has just finished a nine week work placement in Christchurch Hospital as part of his Bachelor of Nursing. Steve’s placements in different areas of the health sector have always involved helping people with disabilities.
Phillipa from Zimbabwe is passionate about community health, and aims to work in primary health with clinicians once she completes her Bachelor of Health Sciences. Phillipa is well-known in Christchurch for her various roles in community health, most recently as Health Promoter and Community Engagement Coordinator for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. She has a special interest in improving the health of girls and women.
Vince Barry, Chief Executive Officer of Pegasus Health, says:
“We are particularly aware of the long standing inequities in health for Māori, Pasifika, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. These scholarships are just one small way we can help support patients from these communities.”
The awards are an annual event and applications open in February each year. Visit Pegasus Health for more information.
